Remembering Craig

I first met Craig Uhland last summer when I hired him to do some work on Dad’s house in Gardnerville. He was a contractor by trade, an excellent one at that. Craig’s family moved to the Nevada side of Tahoe a year or so after my family moved to Carson Valley and that’s where the story begins. When Craig and I first shook hands on the bridge at 1030 Riverview Drive last summer, the first thing he said to me was, “I remember you from high school; you look exactly the same.” Well that immediately caught my attention, since very few people suggest I look “exactly the same” as I did in high school. He proceeded to tell me that he was from Whittell and that he and his friends would drive to Gardnerville to check out the “Douglas girls” at the swimming pool. Craig and I laughed about this. I was extremely flattered he had remembered me, because I had not remembered the incident at all. And I’m the one who remembers everything, so I was taken by surprise! Craig went on to do quite a bit of work for me that summer and we stayed in touch. Through Craig, I became reacquainted with some old friends, Susan Estes and J.B. Wines. I can’t help but think there’s a reason why Craig and I were introduced last summer. It must have been meant to be. My only regret is not knowing or remembering him from high school, because I know I would have liked him very much. According to J.B., he was the first one (in their group of friends) to buy a 35 millimeter camera. He enjoyed taking pictures of friends and family just for the fun of it, something we both had in common. I know he was smart too. After reading the Commencement Program from 1971 (we both graduated from high school the same year) I know now he was the Class Salutatorian. I later learned he also graduated from U.C. Davis. A few days before Craig passed away I had called him to say hello. He had received my package and thanked me and encouraged me to continue just being me. I will miss you, Craig; thank you for being my friend. Beverly Stousland
