Obituary for Gordon Leigh Foote

Gordon Leigh Foote died peacefully at home in Reno on Friday, July 20th at the age of 86.
A fourth generation Nevadan – husband, father, grandfather, Army vet, businessman, and dedicated member of the community, Gordon is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Carolyn, daughter Lori (Kevin) Keller, son Gary (Jane) Foote, and grandchildren Alyssa, Amy, Jillian, Erica and Trevor. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Marie Foote, and sister Margie Foote.
Gordon was born on July 6th, 1932 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He grew up in Sparks, graduating from Sparks High in 1950, and the University of Nevada-Reno in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration. Soon thereafter, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and served in Korea post war, eventually gaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Nevada National Guard. After returning from his service, he resumed working at Harry’s Business Machines, Inc., founded by his father in 1928. Upon his father’s death in 1971, Gordon took over the successful business, and later convinced his son, Gary, to join him. He worked at the company until his retirement at age 80. In 1958, he met the love of his life on a blind date arranged by his cousin Patty Dunn and shortly thereafter married Carolyn Hall, adding daughter Lori, and son Gary to the family in the early 1960’s.
Always community minded, Gordon served the City of Sparks as a council member, and was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and the Sparks Rotary Club. He also was a co-founder of the Sparks Heritage Museum.
His life was largely inspired by seeing his children and especially grandchildren grow, ever-interested in each of their lives.
His ashes will be interned at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery with a family observance. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity or the Sparks Heritage Museum. Condolences can be sent to www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com. The family would like to thank his many friends and neighbors who graced his life.
