Condolence: In today's era of self gratification it is a rare privilege to meet a truly good, caring person. Pauline and I have been blessed . We met Jim. Jim guided me through RCIA IN 2000, Not only bringing me into the church, but always, in his unassuming way, exemplifying the true Christian being. He will be missed.

We are heart broken to hear of Jim’s passing. He was one of the kindest, most beautiful souls we have ever known. Laura loved Jim’s RCIA classes. Condolence: I met Mr. Toner while I was an instructor at Bishop Manogue. He was a huge part of the school, teaching numerous catechist classes as well as holding down the position of President. Mr. Toner knew all the "secrets" of the placing of the icons at Manogue - why they were placed where they were, how we came to have two of the same picture and why we had a picture with a large hole in it. Mr. Toner was loved by everyone. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and important. He had a winning smile that was always accompanied by sparkling eyes and a genuine love for everyone he met. He never said a demeaning word to anyone and I never heard a cross word leave his lips. He was a truly amazing man, a dedicated family man, an ethical, loving man and an example to all of us about what true Christian/Catholic love and acceptance should be. His quiet manner was accompanied by resolve of steel. His spirit will always live at Manogue. While he will be horribly missed, it's a comfort to know that we all have a friend/guardian/angel in Heaven. May God bless his family as they deal with this loss and may He give them the strength they need. May it also be a comfort to them to know that Mr. Toner was loved by so many people and that he will be greatly missed.

Condolence: I met Jim in my work at The National Judicial College. Jim was probably the nicest person I had the pleasure of working with. He was such a gentle soul. I will miss him greatly.

Condolence: Dear family and friends,
I gasped and was so saddened at 5:00 Mass this evening at Snows, when Jim’s passing was announced, and we prayed for him. I truly believed he was shining down upon us.

I first met Jim Toner in 1973. I had just graduated Nevada and went to work for the National Council of Juvenile Court Judges, my first real job. I was only there for about a year and a half. But Jim was so kind and friendly, not just one of the “suits.” We were both red headed, and he reminded me of my older brothers. I left in pursuit of the Social Worker career, I had for 34 years.

Over the years, I continued to encounter Jim and Susan around Reno. I would see them at Mass with their daughters. (Though I doubt Susan remembers me. Jim knew so many people). Generally we were at events at Snows or St. Rose. Other places around the Diocese. My daughter and I both graduated Manogue, and then, there he was, President!

What I remember about Jim? He was soft spoken and witty. Always smiling, and he remembered my name, from when I was “wet behind the ears!” In my thoughts, Jim Toner was the true epitome of “a gentleman and a scholar.” I am blessed and honored to have known him. Jim Toner was truly a holy man.
His bright light will always shine.

May God bring his family comfort and blessings.
Lovingly,
Penny Landell Getts

Condolence: So sorry for your loss, he was a great individual; kind and full of knowledge. Also, interested in learning more. I think he knew more about Perkins County, SD than we do.
