Obituary for August "Gus" Zadra
AUGUST "GUS" ZADRA
March 1927 - January 2016
Gus was born in Ironwood, Michigan, on March 19, 1927. After graduating from high school, he served in the U. S. Navy as a corpsman in WWII until he was discharged in 1944. He went on to receive his bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Superior. Gus spent the next 33 years working in public education in Alaska. He worked on Eielson Air Force Base for 22 years, then transferred to the Fairbanks public school system. He retired as Associate Superintendent of the Fairbanks Public Schools in 1986.
Gus was married to Carol for 55 years. Together they raised 4 children and were blessed with 9 grandchildren: Gina Zadra Walton and husband David of Seattle, and children Rebecca, Seth and Matthew; Marc Zadra of Fairbanks and children Michael and Jensen; August Zadra and wife Michelle of Sherman Oaks, CA, and children Kennedy and Brooke; and Steven Zadra and wife Tracy of Anchorage, and children Cooper and Logan. Gus will also be remembered fondly by his brother Reno Zadra of Ohio, sister Ida Kolak of Wisconsin, brother in law Arlin Barden of Wisconsin, sister in law Arvilla Rehbein of Arizona, nieces and nephews, as well as 2 cousins in Cis, Italy.
Gus loved living in Alaska and enjoyed all the state had to offer: hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and gardening under the midnight sun. Retirement allowed Gus and Carol time to enjoy traveling, frequently cruising, and Gus kept a map of the places around the world they visited. In 2000, they moved to Minden, Nevada, where they reconnected with old friends from Alaska, and made many new friends.
Gus' life was full of family and friends. He loved to walk, was an avid reader, coin collector and lover of birds. Gus was active in various educational professional organizations.
The family is especially grateful for the loving and professional care given to Gus by the Brookdale Garden House staff and the Gentiva Hospice Team. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Alz.org). A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, January 29, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville, with luncheon reception to follow.
