Obituary for Gayle Marie Wickman

Gayle Wickman, age 82, died un-expectantly at her home in Reno on Monday, January 7, 2019. Gayle was born in Merced, California on April 1, 1936 and was one of two children born to Neoline and Herschel Luallen. The family subsequently moved to Lindsay, California where Gayle graduated from Lindsay, HS and then attended the diploma nursing program at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. Upon graduation she returned to her home town and worked as a staff nurse at the Lindsay District Hospital and became Director of Nursing within four years. Gayle took a position as office nurse & manager for a physician’s office in Lindsay. She returned to school to obtain a Radiology license in order to successfully perform all her duties.

In 1957, Gayle married Donald L. Gandy and began her all-time favorite job as mother to Dana, Regina & David. Although she continued to nurse for over 60 years, her most precious and proud achievement was her children.

In 1973, she became an instructor at the College of the Sequoias teaching in both the LVN and RN programs along with teaching part time at Fresno Pacific College. Gayle finally found her niche in nursing…Education. In 1976, she went back to school at Fresno Pacific College and received her BSN and then obtained her Master of Education in 1985.

In 1993, Gayle and her second husband, Robert Wickman, moved to Incline Village, Nevada where she helped start a new hospital in this small town community. Her true love was still calling and in 1995, “Mrs. Wickman” became an Assistant Professor at Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada Reno where she worked until 2004 when she retired as Emeritus Faculty from UNR. Like most “retired” nurses, Gayle continued to work in a per diem status for Renown Health services in her community. She finally (actually) retired in 2017 to enjoy her children, garden, camping and decorating her home for all the holidays. However, she still played an active role in running the family farming business in California.

During her career, Gayle was awarded “Faculty of the Year” several times at the College of the Sequoias and “Most Inspirational Faculty” several times during her tenure at UNR. She served on the curriculum committee, advised hundreds of nursing students and ran the Orvis Assessment Lab. She served as President of the Nu Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau for two terms. Gayle received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Northern Nevada Nurse of Achievement in 2011. Gayle was a 12 year breast cancer survivor.

Gayle is survived by son Dana (Michael) Gandy of Grand Rapids, Michigan, daughter, Regina (Jack) Scambler of Reno, son, David (Karen) Gandy of Lindsay, California and granddaughter, Shelby Gandy of Hanford, California, her nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Gayle was preceded in death by her second husband, Robert Wickman, her parents and her brother Jerry Luallen, granddaughter, Mechelle Gandy and great grandson, Asher Rion. There are so many of you who were lucky enough to hold a special place in Gayle’s heart. Though you may not be mentioned here Gayle never forgot any of you.

Memorial service will be held at Ross, Burke and Knobel Funeral Home, 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno, Nevada at 9am on Saturday, January 19, 2019. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Susan B. Coleman Cancer Foundation or Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
