Ron Hinxman passed into eternal life on Jan. 5, 2019 in Sparks, NV. He was a friend to everyone he met, a kind and gentle soul, and a sterling example of a husband and father.
Dad was born Dec. 2 (“December the tooth,” he would tell anyone who asked), 1940 in Los Angeles, California, the second child of Allan and Tecetl Hinxman.
The day after Christmas, 1951, when Ron was 11, he took a call from the hospital, and a nurse asked for Allan. Ronnie said he wasn’t home and asked to take a message. The nurse said, “Yes, could you please tell him his wife has passed away.” It was a story Dad told us many times and never without choking up. And he always felt sorry for the nurse who didn’t realize she was talking to a child until she heard Ronnie crying and saying, “That’s my mommy, that’s my mommy!” We are thrilled that he is reunited with his mama again.
Allan moved his small family – Dad’s sister, Sandy, was three years older – a handful of times during Dad’s childhood, and Dad attended three high schools in the East Bay area of Northern California and in the greater Los Angeles area. After graduating from San Fernando (Calif.) High in 1958, Dad joined the Army at the age of 17 and spent time at Fort Bliss, Texas and Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
Honorably discharged three years later, Dad returned to San Fernando and began dating a young woman whom he had met through family ties. Two years later, in 1963, he married Ann Bialon. Ron and Ann became parents to Dan just 10 months later, and in 1967 they moved into a home in San Fernando, where they met next door neighbors Cliff and Carol Downey, with whom they would have a lifelong friendship. The Downey’s became family in every sense of the word except blood.
In 1968, Carl was born, but Ron and Ann also lost four babies in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Ann, who died in 2010, often said we had four on earth and four in heaven. Now those four get to experience the love from Mom and Dad that Dan and Carl cherished.
In 1969, the Downey’s, with their five daughters, and Hinxman’s moved together to Medford, Oregon, where they raised their families in tandem – once living under the same roof and twice buying or renting homes next door to each other. They also formed a tax and accounting business together. Taco nights at the Hinxman’s and Spaghetti nights at the Downey’s were a weekly, memorable staple.
In 1982, with a sluggish economy straining a business that needed to feed two families, the Hinxman’s sold their interest in the business and moved to Reno, where Ann’s extended family had staked tents since the 1950s. There, Ron became a CPA and had his own business for more than 30 years. He was mostly known for undercharging his clients.
In Reno, Ann and Ron became grandparents to Jeff, Scott and Jillian, of whom they were tremendously proud. They loved weekend barbecues with the kids and grandkids, their timeshare at Incline Village and spending time with friends and family.
Ron is survived by his sons, Dan (wife Denise) and Carl; grandsons Jeff and Scott; and granddaughter Jillian. He was predeceased by his parents, Allan and Tecetl; his wife of 47 years, Ann; sister, Sandy; the four babies who lived only hours or a few days – Susan, Denise, John and Mary; and granddaughter Mary.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 17, 2019, 11 a.m., at Walton’s Funeral Home, 875 W. Second Street in Reno. A burial will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows, 2700 N. Virginia St., in Reno. In lieu of flowers, we request a donation to the Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association, 639 Isbell Rd. Ste. 240, Reno, NV 89509.
