Obituary for Fred E. Wright

On December 6, 2018, in the early afternoon, our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Great-Papa, Fred E. Wright, took wing to join his beloved Emmie, with his family by his side.

Fred was born in Grand Junction, CO, 95 years ago. A 1941 graduate of North Hollywood High, his studies at Humboldt State were cut short to serve in WWII. He served proudly in the 3rd Army 26th Yankee Division.
In November of 1947, he married Virginia. They enjoyed 57 happy and devoted years together, including wonderful years in retirement, until she passed May of 2004.

Fred received a degree in Wildlife Management with a minor in Botany from the Humboldt State College. Fred started with Nevada Fish and Game in September 1949 as the first statewide waterfowl biologist. In his 30 rewarding years he served as Assistant Federal Aid Coordinator, Assistant Chief of Game, Acting Chief of Game, and then Chief of Administrative Services. His accomplishments were many during those thirty years, including helping to acquire and develop Wildlife Management Areas, assisting in establishing the two-way radio network and also introducing the agency into the world of data processing. Upon retirement, from 1981 to 1995 he lobbied for wildlife interests in Carson City. He also served on numerous boards and as representatives for many wildlife groups.

Fred devoted countless hours over the past decade to a history project of the Nevada Fish and Game/NDOW. With the help and enthusiasm of so many agency retirees, he coordinated a collection of narratives, reports, documents and photos to forever preserve the unique history of this vital agency. This historic project is housed within the Special Collections at UNR.

Fred is survived by daughter Luanne and her husband Dave Hansen, granddaughter Susan and her husband Jason Shipman and two great-grandsons, Micah and Luke. He was passionate about caring for the environment and wildlife. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with his spirit, and if so desired, please consider a memorial donation to the Nevada Waterfowl Association, the Nevada Wildlife Federation or an organization of your choice.

On behalf of Fred, our family is forever thankful for the caring staff at Morning Star Assisted Living and Community Hospice.

A memorial service is planned for January 11, 2019, at 11 am at the Northern Nevada Veterans’ Cemetery in Fernley, with a reception following at Pinocchio’s, Vista Blvd., Sparks.
