Obituary for Gary Alan Maddalena

Gary Alan Maddalena was born on December 31, 1947 and died on December 7, 2018. Gary liked to say, “The world celebrated his birthday by lighting fireworks every New Year’s Eve”. Gary was born in St. Mary’s Hospital in downtown Reno and died at Renown Regional Medical Center. Gary was an incredibly kind person and was not known to have said a cross word to anyone.

Gary graduated from Wooster High School in 1965 and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a degree in History and Political Science in 1969 at the height of the Viet Nam war. Gary enlisted in the Nevada Army National Guard in November 1969 and he retired in 1996 at the rank of Staff Sargent. Gary and his father, Al Maddalena, operated Maddalena Service on the corner Arlington and Liberty until Al’s retirement in 1983. Gary then went to work at IGT until his retirement in 2008. Gary enjoyed the simple things in life. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, was thoughtful and he enjoyed watching the 49er’s, the Dodger’s and the Wolf Pack. Gary was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Reno.

Gary is proceeded in death by his parents, Al and Nina Maddalena. He is survived by his sister Cheryl (Maddalena) Sandve and niece Michelle Mitchell and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Church located on 3835 Lakeside Drive in Reno December 20, 2018 at 2pm. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please send a contribution in Gary’s name to the Veteran’s Guest House 880 Locust St, Reno, NV 89502.
