Obituary for Betty Rax

Print
Betty Rax, 79 died at home in Sparks, NV surrounded by family after a short illness. Mrs. Rax was born on the 19th of February 1939 in Lower Peach Tree, AL to her parents Tempie Mae Wilson and Grady Dortch. At a very young age she moved from Mobile, AL to San Francisco, CA to join her father Grady who had moved out to the West Coast years before. She attended and graduated from Mission High School in San Francisco. She also spent many of her early days in West Oakland with her beloved cousin and “second mother” Mary Williams, Cousin Shep and family. Towards the end of High School, she met her future husband Lambert Bobby Rax. They married shortly after her graduation and began their family in San Francisco moving to Oakland with their six children and buying her treasured home on 62nd Avenue.

Betty Rax always had a wish to be a teacher. She never was an official teacher, but she made sure that all her children were home schooled and could read and write before they started school. She also volunteered as often as she could at her children school Redeemer Luther’s PTA and on their field trips. In addition to being an extraordinary homemaker, she also worked as a caregiver in some of the local senior citizen rest homes.
