Obituary for Robert "Bob" Neil Robertson

Print
Robert “Bob” Neil Robertson passed away on October 13, 2018 at the age of 78. While we know he is overjoyed to be with the Lord, we also know he is pleased to no longer have to deal with political robocalls or campaign ads.

Bob was born December 27, 1939 to John “Jack” Robertson and Tassie Mai Moore Robertson in Mississippi County, Arkansas. The youngest of sixteen children, Bob grew up working on the family farm, helping in the family store in Blytheville, Arkansas, and playing football for Blytheville High School. He served overseas in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Accountancy in 1967, and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston Law School in 1970.
Bob worked as an attorney for Howard Hughes’ Summa Corporation and Hughes Aviation Services. He helped start one of the first intranet medical information service companies, and proudly worked for more than 28 years at South Reno Baptist Church, where he served the Lord and so many others.

Bob could always be counted on to share wise counsel, a strong cup of coffee, and a good joke. His brilliant mind, sharp wit, amazing sense of humor, and his love of good banter will be missed. He was known for his kind heart and his stern exterior. He once earned the nickname, “Jesus Bob” from a child he taught in Sunday School, a title he was humbled by and cherished.

Bob married “the love of his life”, Martha Ann Hodges on August 29, 1964. He once wrote, “Martha and I were married in the Rice University Chapel. We have had better and worse. Better is better. We have had richer and poorer. Richer is better. We have had sickness and health. Health is better. We have had tears and laughter. Laughter is better. We have had anger and peace. Peace is better. We have added loved ones and lost loved ones. Added is better. We have had hard times and easy. Easy is better. We have been without Christ and with Christ. With is better. No one else would have had the love, fortitude and patience to put up with me the way she has. There is no one else I would have rather spent my life with. She has been my pillar of strength and I hers. The one constant we have had is each other. Each other is better. I love you far beyond what these pitiful words can express.” And he made sure to hug and kiss her the day he left this world.

Bob also leaves behind one daughter, AliceAnn Robertson Williams, whom he described as “my smart-smart alecky, argumentatively agreeable, opinionatedly understanding, lovable and loving daughter.” She has often described him as her hero. They enjoyed seeing movies together, riding roller coasters, watching the Dallas Cowboys and the San Antonio Spurs, and drinking coffee together. He called her “Kid”. Growing up he kissed her goodnight every night, and when she was too old to live at home, he started texting her goodnight every day before going to bed. He hated to see her cry and would tell her to “knock it off”, which she can hear in her head now as she writes this.

Additionally, Bob leaves behind his son-in-Law, Aharon, and five grandchildren: Calliope, Cassia, Adonis, Amara, and Cyrus. Bob loved attending Sunday morning church services with them and then spending Sunday lunch together catching up on the week’s events. He was so very proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments and especially of their love of the Lord and willingness to serve. He loved them all deeply and would have loved to watch them change the world with their light.

Bob also leaves behind his brother, Joseph T. Robertson of Kensett, AR, his sister, Tommie Robertson of Memphis, TN, many wonderful nieces, nephews, their children, their children’s children, and their children’s children’s children. The Robertson clan is vast, and Bob loved all of them. He enjoyed social media because it allowed him to keep up with his family all over the country, as well as with his friends, and develop relationships with family that he might otherwise not have had the pleasure to get to know. He also leaves behind an extraordinary church family, especially his fellow church staff members and their families, which he was so close to during his years there. He also leaves behind countless friends who have shared so many amazing memories and stories of his impact on their lives.

Even though Bob hated funerals, his will be held 3pm on Saturday, October 20, at South Reno Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s honor to South Reno Baptist Church.
