Obituary for Jack Edward Dunn

Jack Edward Dunn of Reno passed away in his sleep Saturday morning, February 24, 2018. Jack was born in Reno on July 26, 1927, the son of Jenny and his adoptive father, Tommy Dunn. Jack attended Northside Junior High and graduated from Reno HS in 1945, where his favorite coach and mentor was the legendary Bud Beasley. Jack served in the Navy during WWII and was stationed at Barber's Point Naval Air Station on Oahu, where he boxed and played fullback in the Hawaii service team's football league. Jack said he “was thankful he never saw a gun fired in anger” during the war. Following his hitch in the Navy, Jack began a 34-year career with Nevada Bell, where he advanced to become an outside plant engineer and was responsible for the design and installation of most of the telecommunications infrastructure in northern Nevada and California. A founding member of Great Basin Credit Union, he enjoyed surprising tellers with his account number of “1.” Following his retirement from Ma Bell, Jack could be found serving customers and dispensing wisdom at P&S Hardware for many years. Jack and his wife of 58 years, Laura, were long-time members of the First Congregational Church of Reno where Jack and Laura sang in the choir and he served in a variety of lay positions, including deacon. Jack was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golf, fly fishing and hunting. Jack may be singularly responsible for the demise of the sage hen in northern Nevada. Always willing to serve, Jack served as the umpire coordinator for the Reno American Little League, and was always willing to help family, friends and neighbors with home projects. Jack enjoyed relieving his friends of unnecessary pocket change during friendly poker games, and was an avid cribbage player at family gatherings. Jack was known and loved by many in Reno, and he and Laura could be found visiting with friends at the Gold ‘N Silver Inn and other Reno establishments. Jack is deeply loved by Laura, his children Robbin and David (Sandy), and grandchildren Alonzo and Zachary Vasquez, and Caroline and Diana Dunn. He truly appreciated the friendship of his cousins Don and Michele Reynolds and Ken and Carol Henry. Jack rarely discussed politics, but nevertheless had prepared for the coming President Trump societal collapse by stashing away a cache of Svenhard’s bear claws. Jack was a gentle man of quiet Christian faith, and we look forward to seeing him again.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm, Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Walton’s Funeral Home, 875 W. 2nd St., Reno, Nevada, followed by a reception at the Walton’s Event Center 600 W. 2nd Street.
