Obituary for Allen K. Frandsen

After a three year struggle with the ravages of mesothelioma, Allen K. Frandsen passed quietly into the night on January 25, 2018, surrounded by family. Born in Pocatello, ID to Melvern Frandsen and Gladys (Christensen) Frandsen on August 6, 1936, during his younger years, Al lived in Idaho, Oregon and Missouri before settling in Elko, NV with his mother and four sisters. A veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Al joined the navy at the age of 17, proudly serving his country for 22 years, first with the Navy and retiring as an Air Force Master Sergeant with duty stations in Europe, Southeast Asia and the United States.
After his military service Al moved his family to Reno, NV joining his mother and sisters and began his second career with Wells Manufacturing in Verdi, NV. Retiring as Director of Technical Services, Al was well respected in the restaurant equipment manufacturing world working with distinction with leading industry groups such as NAFEM and CFESA. Given the responsibility and opportunity, Al and wife Marge traveled again across these United States and Europe.
From a young age, Al loved to hunt and fish and spent many happy hours and days wandering the hills of Northern Nevada with his son and friends in search of game, adventure and memories.
While working with Wells manufacturing, he took up the game and aggravation of golf and after retirement it became his committed hobby and any day of the week you would find him on the course meeting with or making new friends. Recognizing its importance to younger generations and to the community, Al also devoted years of his retirement to the NV Department of Wildlife as a Volunteer Hunter Safety Instructor mentoring young Northern Nevadans towards safe, responsible gun handling and ownership and ethical hunting standards and practices.
From a little boy until he parted this good earth Al always loved dogs. While in the service he was deprived of that pleasure but in retirement there was always a dog or two in and part of the family. After retirement he could be found every morning walking the foothills behind the house with Coco, Cinnamon or his beloved Buddy again meeting with or making new friends.
Above all, Allen loved and treasured his family. He was the Wind Beneath Our Wings. His son, Jess and daughter, Tracey were his pride and joy. He regretted the times he was forced to be away from them due to his service obligations. While together as a family, no matter what country or state we were in, we traveled far and wide as a unit. Whether in an exotic place, deer hunting or visiting relatives in Canada, we did it together. Later when the grandchildren came he could be heard bragging about their accomplishments whether big or small – he loved them all dearly.
Allen is survived by his wife, Marge, of 59 years, his son, Jesse (Michelle), his daughter, Tracey, grandchildren, Megan, AJ, Jessica and Charlotte, his sisters, Mary Jean Joslin and Patricia (Wayne) Nielsen and his Uncle, Jesse (Ruby) Christensen with whom he was very close.
He was predeceased by his father Melvern Frandsen, mother, Gladys (Christensen) McDonald, sisters, Joyce Cook and Janet DelOstia. He will be forever missed and loved.
The family would like to thank the kindness and tender care given to Allen by the staff and nurses at the Renown Infusion Center. Allen will be interned at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors March 2, 2018 at 1:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on March 3, 2018, at St Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3835 Lakeside Drive in Reno.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation in Allen’s memory by visiting curemeso.org and clicking on “Donate” in the top right, or to the Veterans Guest House, 880 Locust St, Reno 89502.
