Obituary for Dudley George Cate

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother entered eternal life on January 16, 2018. Dudley, a Native Nevadan, was born August 15, 1939, to the late George McKnight and Mary Fallon Cate.
He attended Southside Elementary, Northside Middle School where he was on the “Heavies” basketball team and played the French horn in the band, and graduated from Reno High where he played football, was the student body president, and met his future wife, Marlene Ferrari.
High school summers he worked with his dad in highway construction all over Northern Nevada. Throughout college, Dudley worked nights at the Reno Post Office, and as a young teacher, he spent weekends and holidays delivering rural routes.
Dudley earned his B.S. from UNR, a Master’s Degree from The University of Oklahoma, taught science in Middle School, taught chemistry at Hug High, served as Dean and Vice Principal at Hug, and was Principal at Reed High from 1982-1992. He then worked at UNR where he supervised student teachers and developed the Bill Raggio Science, Math, and Technology Center. Along with other teachers, he developed innovative and interactive Science Festivals.
Dudley loved being with family and friends, camping, hunting, diving for abalone, golfing, and coaching Miss America softball. He loved reading, praying, Monday Men’s group, Book Club, and enjoyed all sports. One of his greatest joys was being with his grandsons. He loved attending their activities and sporting events. Dudley was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, Sierra Ministries, Young Life, Acts IV, church boards, Character Counts, and several professional organizations. He co-authored a science text book, traveled to Washington, D.C., to accept the School of Excellence Award for Reed High, and in 1996, he received the President’s Medal from UNR. He also received an award of appreciation from the Northern Nevada Writing Project and a dedicated service award from the WCTA.
He was preceded in death by both parents and his nephew, Brad Dallimore. He is survived by his wife Marlene, daughters, Annette Cate and Shelly Guevin, son-in-law, Eric Guevin, grandsons, Jeremy and Matthew Guevin, brother, Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Robert F. Cate, sister and brother-in-law Alice and Fred Dallimore, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Charlotte and Don Herrin, and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.
In his life, in his caring, in his faith, Dudley was always there for others.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 4, 2018, at 1:30 pm at Reed High School, 1350 Baring Blvd., Sparks, NV.
