Obituary for Edward (Poppy) McCaffery

Edward “ Poppy” McCaffery, 86, passed away on Sunday , January 28, 2018. He did it his way until the very end. Dad was affectionately known by everyone as Big Ed and later in life as Poppy. He was born December 26, 1931 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
His family was the light of his life, and he let us know it every single day. Dad was never shy to express his love for us, always ending his conversations with us with a heart felt I love you. He was a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and in those roles we could not have asked for a better or stronger man. Dad was our rock and gave us strength every day. He taught us the importance of education, hard work, honesty, family, and laughter
Ed was a veteran of the US Army. During his service, he was a member of the Special Forces.
In 1959, he purchased Walton's Funeral Home and worked close to 60 years building a legacy, while helping so many families in our community in their time of need. He worked up until two weeks before his death, in the industry he cherished. He was committed to giving back to his community and those less fortunate, serving on numerous non-profit boards. Poppy seldom missed any of his children’s or grandchildren’s sporting or school events. He was always their biggest fan and supporter. He is survived by his loving daughters, Paula McCaffery and Tammy Dermody (Michael); sons, Ed McCaffery (Tanya) and Tim McCaffery (Claudia); grandchildren, Joey, Nikki, Calvin, Griffin, Jack, Avery, Aiden, Ashton, Pearce and Craig, and great-grandchildren; Noah, David, Sophia and Hudson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Agnes, and grandson Edward.
A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1 at Walton Funeral Home, 875 West Second Street, Reno, Nevada. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception immediately following the service.
