Obituary for Rose S. Hernandez

Rose S. Hernandez

September 4, 1936 – October 14, 2017
Rosalia (Rose) Hernandez was born in Colorado City, Texas on September 4, 1936. Rose was one of twelve children born to Marcelino and Ernestina Hernandez, raised in the small town of Santa Maria located in Southwest Phoenix, Arizona. In 1957, Rose was married to Juan E. Hernandez and soon started their family of three before moving to southern California. Rose eventually raised her nine children in the city of Bellflower, California and was preceded in death by her husband Juan in 1977. Eight years later, she was remarried, proud and blessed to spend the past 32 years with her husband Luis Cuevas-Torres. Rose was also recently preceded in death by her son, Edward J. Hernandez. She is survived by her husband Luis, her children, Emily H. Nunez, Rosie H. Fitch, Mary Lou H. Tapia, Becky H. Guerra, Juan Hernandez, Richard Hernandez, Ruben Hernandez and David Hernandez as well as their spouses, many grandkids, great grandchildren, and several of her siblings.
Rose had a passion for cooking and enjoyed spending her time in the kitchen for large family gatherings. She was an excellent cook and she loved to bake cheesecakes, pies, and coffee cake. Rose also had a special family recipe for chicken enchiladas. Most of her children have learned to cook thanks to Rose, but they will greatly miss her tamales at Christmastime. Rose had retired as Food Service Director at Anaheim General Hospital at the age of 55.
Rose and Luis moved to Carson City, Nevada in December 2012, and quickly adjusted to the changing seasons and mountainous views of Northern Nevada and rarely missed the 100+ temperatures of Phoenix. Rose enjoyed visiting with family and friends, going with her grandchildren to Lake Tahoe, attend Reno events such as Hot August Nights or the Rib Cook-off, eating out, trying her luck at casino slot machines, and attending youth basketball or baseball games to see her grandsons play ball.
On Saturday evening, October 14, 2017, Rose passed away peacefully at home and was surrounded with so much love with her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her brother Joe by her side. She will always be loved, missed and remembered for her beauty, her legacy and her unconditional love for all.
