Obituary for Chrisanthe (Chris) K. Argeres

Chrisanthe (Chris) K. Argeres was born on May 29, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Angela Karzas. The daughter of Greek immigrants, she lived with her parents, two brothers, aunt and grandmother in the bustling Greek Town of Chicago, where her father owned a bar and restaurant; and the family were members of St. Demetrius Church.

In 1957 Chris met Paul Argeres, at the wedding of their brother and sister, Harry and Helen Karzas also in Chicago. Before Helen and Harry’s wedding, Chris was asked to show the fun-loving, charismatic young man from Sparks, NV around the city. Chris’ beauty and zest for life took Paul by surprise. They fell in love and were soon engaged.

Within a year, Paul and his best friend, Coe Swobe, drove cross-country back to Chicago for Chris and Paul’s wedding. Initially, the couple could not be married in the Greek Church because of the unusual circumstance that two of their siblings were already married to each other, so a small ceremony was held in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Chapel at Northwestern University. However, month later, the church recognized the union; and another ceremony was held. When she moved to Reno, Paul’s sister, Vaslie Pappas, had a party to introduce Chris to the community.

A city girl through and through, Chris brought a sophisticated sense of style to what was still a small Nevada town. When her 70-year-old grandmother visited the Argeres home on the freshly paved Mayberry Drive, she was perplexed and asked, “Where are all the people?” Despite the new environment and living a continent away from her family, Chris dedicated herself to her new life, making a comfortable home for her husband and two children, Tammy and Peter.

An accomplished cook, Chris’ ability to create delicious, traditional Greek dishes drew family and friends to their home. The opportunity to dine at the Argeres’ for Chris’ unforgettable roasted lamb was a welcome invitation, as she took special care to make each guest feel welcome and special. There also were many parties held by Chris and Paul for Tammy and Peter’s friends that featured more food than one could imagine.

Chris also was a member of the Junior Charity League of Reno. Paul and Chris were founding parishioners of the local Greek Orthodox Church, and Chris joined the church’s Philoptochos Society for Women to which she belonged until her death. For a couple years, she also worked at the Trinity Thrift Shop.

Both Chris and Paul cherished their four granddaughters: Kristine and Kathleen Kelly and Sofia and Paulette Argeres. Chris did her best to spoil each of them when they visited Reno.

Chris will be missed for her elegance, spirited personality and big heart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Argeres; parents, George and Angela Karzas; and brothers, Harry and John. She leaves behind her daughter, Tammy Kelly, (Pat) of La Quinta, CA; son Peter Argeres (Diana), of Seattle, WA; granddaughters, Kristine and Kathleen Kelly and Sofia and Paulette Argeres, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family invites you to leave a condolence message in the Book of Memories Guestbook on: www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com.
