Obituary for Susie Rasmussen

Lawvon Delorse “Susie” McKim Rasmussen was born on August 3, 1930, in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Susie passed on July 2, 2017, in Reno, Nevada.

Susie was one of ten children born to Lowell C. and Lillie (Reynolds) McKim. She graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1949 and married Carroll Rasmussen on January 7, 1951. Susie and Carroll lived on the Rasmussen family farm near Cozad, Nebraska, which they operated until 1966. In 1966, Susie, Carroll, and their three children moved to Sparks, Nevada.

Susie was an exceptionally talented seamstress and assisted in supporting her family by making custom draperies. Her talents also leant to performing alterations and making custom tailored clothing. She and Carroll generously opened their home to friends. Susie found any reason for family and friends to gather and enjoy a party. She loved flower planting in her yard, tea with the ladies, Broadway plays, and going to lunch.

Susie’s greatest joy was having her family around her, which was made easy by her talent in the kitchen. The opportunity to have something from Susie’s kitchen was rarely missed. Her girls, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren learned about baking, the arts, crafting, and sewing by her hand.

She enjoyed traveling and some of her more memorable trips were to Ireland, New York, Canada, and Washington DC.

Susie is survived by her husband, Carroll; three children, Ted (Gloria) Rasmussen of Tekoa, Washington, Cyndee (Richard) Carsten of Sparks, Nevada, and Severen (Tom) Thompson of Reno, Nevada; her brother, Harlan McKim of Lebanon, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren, Ron (Suzy) Rasmussen, Tina (Mike) Sablan, Rich (Misty) Rasmussen, Theresa Carsten, Amy (Ed) Foster, Erin Thompson, and Whip (Mandy) Thompson. She enjoyed time spent with her five great-grandchildren, Riley Rasmussen, Alex Rasmussen, Hannah Foster, Gage Foster, and Raya Thompson; and with dozens of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Say not in grief, that she is gone, but give thanks that she was ours.

A memorial service celebrating Susie’s life will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 10am at Walton’s Funeral Home located at 875 West Second Street, Reno, Nevada.
