We lost the best father, grandfather and great grandfather on June 9, 2017 at age 83. Stan was born on January 16, 1934 to Nils Oscar Winson and Grace Cullum in Tulare, California. He enlisted in the Marines in 1951 and was a radio communications specialist during the Korean War. He attended Stockton College, University of the Pacific and Sacramento State after his discharge from the Marines in 1954 and eventually ended up in Anchorage, Alaska as a surveyor. He moved on to work for Aero Jet Corporation as a test engineer for the Titan I and II missiles until 1963. He met and married Louise Haxel in 1960 and together they settled in Carmichael, California with their three young daughters. By 1963 Stan began working for Burke Concrete and his sales area brought him often to the Reno area. In 1969 the family moved from Carmichael to Reno where Stan established his construction company, which he operated for over 30 years. He was a wonderful and supportive father, never missing a volleyball or softball game. He continued his support with his granddaughters’ and grandsons’ sporting events and when he wasn’t busy watching them, he was himself playing softball, which he did for many years, well into his 70’s. Stan also enjoyed playing golf and skeet shooting. He was a long-time member and past president of the Sparks Rotary as well.
Stan was predeceased by his parents and his brother Mel and is survived by his daughters Debbie (Brett) Barker, Kathie Winson, and Linda Feroah. He is also survived by his grandchildren Michelle Barker Hurley, Christie (Clint) Stitser, Brandon (Nicole) Barker, Taran and Keegan Feroah and by his great-grandchildren Brayden, Jesslyn and Addison Hurley, Avery, Brynn and Maxwell Stitser, and Charles and Warren Barker. He is also survived by his two brothers Gene and Bob, as well as by his long-time partner Mary Overpeck. We will celebrate Stan’s life on Tuesday, June 20 at 1pm at Ross, Burke & Knobel, 1538 C Street, Sparks. There will be a gathering following the service at Woody’s Grille & Spirits, 960 S. McCarran Blvd in Sparks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Nevada Humane Society.
