Obituary for Evangeline Grubic

Evangeline (Pavlakis) Grubic passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the age of 85. Born on September 10, 1931 to James and Despina Pavlakis, she spent her youth helping her father at the Royal Bakery in Ely, Nevada. She graduated from White Pine High School and was a member of the Glee Club.

In Ely, Evangeline met her husband Daniel D. Grubic, from Ruth, Nevada, and they were married on February 14, 1954 at Saint Alexio’s Greek Orthodox Church in Ely. Shortly after the arrival of their first child, Daniel Paul, the trio moved to southern Nevada, eventually settling in Sparks, Nevada where their second child, Anita Marie, was born in 1960.

When Evangeline’s children attended school, she began part-time employment at Weinstock’s Department Store in Reno. She enjoyed meeting new colleagues and her employment soon turned to full time. Her husband was jokingly referred to as Mr. Weinstock’s as Evangeline enjoyed finding bargains, leaving most of her earnings at the store. She retired from Weinstock’s in 1987.

Evangeline was an active member in her childrens’ PTA organizations, Boy Scouts, White Pine Fair Femmes, St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church, Philoptochos Society, and Daughters of Penelope.

She enjoyed playing bridge and gardening. Going for a boogey ride on Sundays was a highlight. Evangeline’s most treasured moments were shared with her grandchildren, Krysta and Kathryn. She would spend endless hours singing and reading with them.

Evangeline is survived by her husband, Daniel D. Grubic; daughter, Anita Grubic-Moore (Jim); brother, Mike Pavlakis (Karen); sister, Harriet Christie; granddaughters Krysta Seiler (Edwin) and Kathryn Moore. Also, she leaves behind nephews Chris, Greg, Bill and Michael Christie who adored her. Evangeline is preceded in death by her parents, James and Despina Pavlakis; brother, Paul Pavlakis; sister, Nina Jukich; and son, Daniel Paul Grubic.

The family would like to acknowledge the many caregivers who provided comfort and friendship to Evangeline over the last several years. We are particularly grateful to the angels at Manor Care in Reno, Five Star Premier Residences of Reno, and Gentiva (Kindred) Hospice.

Per Evangeline’s request, no services will be held.
