Though he was born and raised in Oakland, Tahoe and the Carson Valley area were always special places for him. In his younger years summers were spent at the family cabin at Marla Bay, teen years were spent working various summer jobs at Lake Tahoe and on the family ranch in Smith Valley. He began his long career in law enforcement with the Alameda County Sheriffs Department in 1962. He started as a Deputy at Santa Rita County Jail and as a patrolman. He went through a series of promotions over the years working in Narcotics and investigations finally ending his career as Deputy Chief. During his time as Captain of the main substation he was an innovator for many great changes that remain in effect today. He was well respected by his fellow co-workers.

In addition to choosing a career of public service, Dennis was active in his community serving on the Board of the Dublin San Ramon Services District (DSRSD), a special services district providing residents in Dublin and San Ramon with fire, sewer, water trash and parks and recreation services.

Following his retirement from the Alameda County Sheriffs he went to work for Operating Engineers Local #3 where he traveled to different Law Enforcement agencies signing them up for Union representation He left that position to live in one of his favorite places, Lake Tahoe.
