Obituary for Lawrence Gary Young

Lawrence G. Young, 80, passed away with family by his side on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nevada.
Larry was born on October 6, 1935, the son of Lawrence and Lucy Young, in Colusa Memorial Hospital, Colusa, California. He graduated from Princeton High School in 1953, where he met the love of his life Clara M. Pina. Larry entered the U.S. Navy in February 1954 and married Clara on June 19, 1954. After serving his country for four years, he was discharged from the Navy in January 1957 as an Electronic Technician.
On September 12, 1954, Larry and Clara began their family with the birth of Lucille Mae born in Colusa, CA. Four more children were in their future and two years later on August 11, 1956, Robert Wayne was born in Vallejo, Ca. On January 18, 1960, Ernest Lee was born in San Luis Obispo as their third child. Their fourth child, William Gene, was born in Sacramento on November 22, 1961. Frank Aaron, their fifth and final child was born in Sacramento on January 18, 1964.
Lawrence entered the University California Polytech, in San Luis Obispo in 1957 and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree as an Electronic Engineer in 1961. Clara was busy with their three children, Lucille, Robert and newly born Ernie.
Fresh out of college, Larry was hired in 1961 by the University of Davis as a Research Associate. Larry worked hard and kept Clara busy with their five young children. In 1966, Larry made a career move and was hired by the University of Nevada Reno, Water Resources Department as a Research Associate. As Larry’s career blossomed, he was fortunate to travel with work projects and made two trips to the Antarctica as a Research Engineer. In May of 1994 Larry retired and began his journey with his grandkids, some traveling with Clara and family and his beloved animals.
Larry was an outdoorsman and in his younger years loved to snow ski, fish, backpack, fly remote control airplanes, race motorcycles and hunt. In his later years, he enjoyed golf and was an avid NASCAR fan. He had many hours as a pilot but never pursued a license. He loved his grandchildren and dove right into BMX bike racing in 1995 with the kids. He formed GP Racing and sponsored his grandkids Christopher, Malcolm, Kyle, Dylan and Holli in local races as well as National events.
Lawrence leaves loving memories to be cherished by Clara after 61 years of marriage; brother, John; children; Lucille Boyle (Don) of Reno, Robert Young of Stockton, Ernie Young (Sandy) of Carson City, William Young of Carson City and Frank Young (Sunny) of Tacoma, Washington. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren will miss their grandpa.
Services and “Celebration of Life” will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at 1:00pm at Walton’s Funeral Home on 875 W. Second St., Reno, NV 89503. Viewing will be from 2:00pm to 7:00pm at Walton’s on Wednesday, February 17th. Burial with military honors will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno immediately after the services. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a “gathering” at Clara’s house at 7725 Kelly Lane, Reno, NV 89506 after the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to your choice or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 52.
