Obituary for Bruno Ronald Nerino

Bruno Ronald Nerino was born in Indiana, December 2, 1920, to Immigrant Italian parents, from Venezia, Domenico and Maria Nerino. He passed on July 24, 2014. He was 93 y/o, still walking, talking, laughing, enjoying outings with his family and friends he made at his wonderful home away from home, Emeritus Memory Care. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nenzi Boano Nerino, his parents, Maria and Domenico Nerino, and his sister, Norma Ferazza, of Indiana. He is survived by his stepdaughters, Adrienne Trinchero of Idaho, and Lilliana Trinchero of Reno, nephew, Mark Ferazza, of Washington, and niece, Mary Jo Ferazza, of Chicago. a niece, Carla Boano Pendill, of Reno, her daughter, Marissa Pendill, and son Taylor, of Reno, a grandson, Darren Farnesi, of San Diego. He spent his youth in Chicago, then joined the Army in WWII and served in the Pacific Theater as a transport driver. He served time in India and had many stories about his time spent in India, with the snakes and the monsoons, and the Indian Special Forces, called the Gerkas.

After discharge, he moved to Reno, and took a job as a bartender at a Hotel/ Restaurant on 4th St, called the Riviera Hotel. Many of us Renoites remember the Riviera Hotel, famous for their “Torpedo Sandwiches” and Friday night music with “The Singing Cherokee Band”. Bruno played the drums in this band. He was very musical and also played the harmonica, as well as serving as the bartender. The Hotel was owned by Nenzi ‘s Great Uncle, Pietro Gandolfo, who came from Castell al’fero, Italy and settled in Reno in 1917. When Pietro passed away in 1952, Nenzi and her brother, Louigi Boano inherited the Riviera Hotel, and when the new owners walked into the Riviera Hotel, Bruno the bartender, met and fell madly in love with, Nenzi, and she was mesmerized. She was a single mother of two daughters, Lilliana and Adrienne Trinchero, and after dating for a few years, they began their lives together. They married in 1957, and were married for 51 years, before Nenzi passed in 2008.l

Together Bruno and Nenzi owned a very popular laundry and cleaners in the 1950‘s and 60‘s called the B & N Shirt-o-Rama on Vassar and Wells Ave. Nenzi was such a perfectionist at finishing the western shirt that all the Harold’s Club employees wore, and the starched white on white shirts that the Harrah’s Club employees had to wear, that their business thrived for many years, with floor to ceiling bundles of clothing to clean and launder .They began their day at 3AM and finished at 8PM 6 days a week.

As a family, both daughters worked in the business, waiting on the customers, and folding or bundling the shirts. Bruno was in charge of the washing and deliveries to the casinos of all of the entertainers’ cleaning and shirts, and Mam was in charge of Quality Control

They formed such a trusting relationship with Bill and Verna Harrah, that they were invited to come to the Harrah home, and pick up all of their personal laundry, and then deliver to them. Bill Harrah would go to Italy for custom shirts, and have them shipped directly to Bruno and Nenzi for laundering. They were very proud of their business success, and were an American Model of Entrepreneurship. She was not able to speak or write English well, and Bruno, with a 6th grade education, they still succeeded with their hard work and consistent attention to quality and hard work. When they sold the laundry, they invested in commercial RE and built 3 commercial buildings, that still are rented out to local businesses today.

With ultimate attention to frugality and hard work, they were able to retire in their 50’s with income from their investment properties. They kept a constant vigil on each of their properties, visiting them all weekly, communicating frequently with the tenants, and supporting their business efforts. They were well loved by their tenants.

Bruno and Nenzi loved their family and all efforts were about the famiglia, always with love and caring. They worked hard, and laughed a lot (Bruno had a quick wit and a bartender personality; he was the professor of trivia ) They danced (Mama loved to dance), and gardened, cooked and welcomed family to frequent dinners. Gnocchi, Bagna Cauda, and Ravioli were her specialties. They had a beautiful home and yard that they loved and manicured, until Nenzi’s death.

A few years before Nenzi’s death, Bruno had some profound health challenges and Nenzi was unable to manage these at home, so Bruno went to live at Emeritus Memory Care, formerly The Court of Reno, on Plumas Ave, with frequent trips home to visit Nenzi and family until her death in 2008.

He was so well cared for at Emeritus for nearly 12 years, that he did not ever want to leave. There, he made many acquaintances with the patients and staff, and served as their “Eyes and Ears”, watching over other patients’ care and staff’s behavior. He was loved by so many at Emeritus. We all knew that he was cared for like he was family there, so that we could live our lives, knowing he had the best of care there. He would have weekly outings with family, but loved his “family” at Emeritus. They dubbed him “King of the Boat House”, and treated him like a king with special plans for his food, outings, activities and musical presentations. He remained at a high functioning level , laughing, walking with a walker, eating, going on outings, watching his sports events on TV, and enjoying his family until his stroke on July 21, which occurred while he was getting a blood draw for his labs at the VA hospital.

He lived a charmed life, with much love, hard work, laughter, and successes in business and investments, until shortly before his passing..

There was a small funeral service by Walton’s Funeral Home on July 31st in Reno at Our Mother of Sorrows Mausoleum, where he was laid to rest alongside his Nenzi..

And, for anyone who knew him, there will be a Celebration of Life gathering at Emeritus Memory Care Center on August 23, 2014, at 2:00 PM, to celebrate his humor, talent and any funny stories about his life, and to thank the wonderful caregiver family at Emeritus, who adopted him and his family with such caring ways. Bruno’s family is eternally grateful for the wonderful care they gave to Bruno and all of us for 12 years,

A special thanks to Ofelia, and staff at Emeritus, and the special people of Gentiva Hospice, that helped Bruno to pass on with such care and support. He was blessed to have all of you in his life!
